Tips to Mimimize ATM Charges

Tips on ways to avoid or minimize ATM charges.

First, please keep in mind that there are two kinds of charges.  There are charges which can be imposed by the issuer of the card, and there are charges which can be imposed by the owner of the ATM machine.  This second type of charge by the owner of the ATM is called a “surcharge”.

As the issuer of your Instant Cash card, we do not impose a charge for your use of the card unless you use a “foreign” ATM machine.  If you use a foreign machine, we will charge you $1.00 which we deduct from your account.  These machines are not foreign machines and we will not charge you for using them:

    •  All Instant Cash ATM machines
    •  All Wells Fargo ATM machines

We consider all other ATMs to be foreign ATM machines.

Surcharges are a bit more complicated.  You will never be charged a surcharge if you use a card issued by us in a machine owned by us.  In addition, you will not be charged a surcharge if you use a Wells Fargo ATM machine that is located at a Wells Fargo bank anywhere in the U.S.A.  If you use a Wells Fargo ATM machine that is not attached to a Wells Fargo bank (for example, a free standing unit someplace) you probably will have to pay a surcharge.

When you use an ATM, the screen will always warn you if you will have a surcharge if you complete the withdrawal, and it will give you an opportunity to cancel the transaction before you are charged.

At present there are at least seven Instant Cash and Wells Fargo ATM locations in Mesa County where you will not be charged a surcharge:

·         At our four Grand Valley National Bank locations:

      1. 7th and Belford in Grand Junction
      2. 106 Main, Collbran
      3. 570 25 Road in Grand Junction
      4. Highway 6 & 50 and Maple Street in Fruita

·         At the three Wells Fargo Bank locations:

      1. 4th and Main in Grand Junction
      2. 28 Road and North Avenue in Grand Junction
      3. Peachtree Plaza in Clifton

Virtually all cards including Quest cards are accepted at all Grand Valley National Bank ATM locations.

Additional Money Saving Tips!

First, if you must use a foreign machine, withdraw extra money if you can.

Both our charges and the owner’s surcharges are the same regardless of the size of the withdrawal at a foreign machine.  In other words, it costs just as much to withdraw $20.00 as it does $200.00.  Obviously, if you withdraw extra money you can get by with fewer withdrawals and fewer charges.

Use the card for purchases rather than cash.

At a merchant that accepts VISA credit cards, press credit on the PIN pad, or present your card to the merchant and sign the receipt.  The transaction will be charged to your checking account with a description of where your purchase was made.

Receive Cash back with a purchase.

When you use your Instant Cash or Instant Cash & Check Visa debit card at a merchant that participates with the Pulse Network, you can receive cash back with your purchases by pressing the debit key on the merchant's PIN pad and entering your ATM PIN number.  There is no surcharge for foreign ATM usage charge for these transactions.

To Get a Card

If you just have an ATM card, talk to one of our new accounts people about an Instant Cash and Check Visa debit card.  In addition to being an ATM card, an Instant Cash and Check card is used like a credit card and is accepted by merchants worldwide wherever VISA cards are accepted.  The difference is that your purchase comes right out of your account at Grand Valley National Bank (with no special bank fees).  With an Instant Cash and Check Card you can get by carrying less money.

Daily Card limits

You should be aware that there are daily limits on your use of your Instant Cash and Check VISA debit card.  The limits are $250.00 for cash withdrawals (including purchases using the card as a debit card with your PIN number) plus $500.00 for point of sale purchases when you use the VISA debit card like a VISA credit card.  The daily limits are put in as a security feature, but we understand that everyone has different needs. If you need your daily limits to be higher, just let us know and we can raise the limits.

Incidentally, if you are in a foreign country with ATM machines, the ATM is just about the least expensive and most convenient place to obtain local currency.

A word about consumer protection

If your Instant Cash and Check VISA debit card is lost or stolen and unauthorized VISA transactions do take place, your maximum exposure to loss is $50.00.  If you report that the card has been lost or stolen within two days of discovering the fact, your maximum exposure to loss from unauthorized VISA transactions is $0.00.  There has been some negative press about how risky debit cards are.  With respect to Instant Cash and Check VISA debit cards issued by Grand Valley National Bank, the negative press is simply not true.
